Effects of Climate Change on Cancers, Fungal
Diseases and Mycotoxins
Impact of climate change on
mycotoxin exposure
Environmental conditions promoting
mycotoxin formation are moisture and high temperature.
Mycotoxicoses are much more frequent
in tropical than in moderate regions.
Due to climate change increases in temperature and moisture
levels:
Ø
Aspergillus species are spreading constantly northwards.
Ø
In tropical countries, mold
related challenges may be further exacerbated.
Ø
Certain fungi may disappear,
while appearing in new regions previously not at risk.
Modelling studies have predicted a marked
increase of aflatoxins contamination risk of corn crops in Northern Italy and
Eastern Europe, in the case of +2°C and +5°C
temperature increase scenario.
